[Intro]

J. Corden:

Our next guest was the first ever K-pop artist to perform on the Late Late show.

CL:

My name is CL. I come from Korea. I’m a performer, artist, musician.

J. Corden:

The singular, the dazzling, CL is here on the show tonight!

CL:

James, what’s up!

[Part 1]

I went to an international school, like, my whole life, in France, in Japan, and also in Korea. I would feel like an alien. Cause it’s not like.. I’m not totally Korean, I’m not totally Japanese, cause I’m not totally.. you know. Sometimes it was hard. And I think my friends that go to school here or in Paris. They find it harder. You know, I started working early. So it was kind of easy for me.

I’m an open book. I love making friends. And I’m not afraid to be a fan of somebody. I feel like I can learn from anyone. I like getting inspired, meeting new people, talking to them about their life, like, listening to what they went through.

Actually, I think I was a good student. I was the type that was close with the teachers. I think I was really mature from when I was young. So, I would like have lunch with the teachers and just, like, chill with them. Not in a kissing-ass way. I just can’t do that. But, yeah. I was, like, friends with them. And all my friends were always older than me. I really like listening to people’s stories and.. You know they’ve been through all that.

No. Actually, he’s cool with everything. He’s an artist himself. He does painting. He writes children’s book. And he makes these robots, so.. He was actually the one who wanted me to do music. He’s the one that inspired me. He’s the one who made me listen to all the good music when I was young.

I like American Japanese food. That’s the only thing I eat when I get here, right? It’s just different, but it’s good. You know, like, in Korea, there’s like Chinese food, and it’s not like Chinese food. I think that’s how it is here. It’s not like proper, proper sushi and stuff.

Friends and Modern Family type of stuff. Because I think my daily life is so dramatic that when I go back home, I like to sit back and watch those stuff I cannot do, you know. To be honest, these days, I’m listening to the stuff I’ve made. The new stuff I’m making. I feel like, when you’re on the plane by yourself, that’s the only time I feel like I get my own time. That’s one of my favorite moments. Like, I could just sit down and listen to the stuff I’ve made, go through the stuff I couldn’t because of all the craziness.

[Part 2]

My name is CL. I come from Korea. I’m a performer, artist, musician. I’m in a band called 2NE1. Right now, I’m working on my solo album in America. To me, being creative is expressing myself. And I’ve been doing that for a long time. And the only difference would be that I’m singing in English now. I feel like there is not one popstar. Like, no one female pop star that’s representing all the girls that’s living out here. I want to represent, you know, asian girls. What I need right now, for me to make it here, is.. It’s a matter of time.

[Part 3]

Interviewer:

How long have you worked together to get to the point that you’re at now?

CL:

Well it’s been years since we’ve known each other. But we were put together as 2NE1, like, three, four years ago. I mean, we were preparing for solo careers. She came back from the Philippines to be an actress in Korea. And she was a solo artist herself. And we were preparing for albums. But we recorded this song called ‘Pretty Boy.’ It’s in our first album, three years ago. And (we) just became 2NE1. It sounded so good, you know.

Interviewer:

Yeah, and of course, the label is YG Entertainment, which is one of the big three labels in South Korea. But what really strikes me is the marketing savvy that was utilized to break you in. I wanna talk a little.. because you’re business people. Would you consider yourself entertainers and business people?

CL:

Yes, of course.

Interviewer:

Okay, so.. You had this song ‘Lollipop,’

CL:

Yes

Interviewer:

which was a song that was broken on in LG cellphone commercial. Was that the first thing that kind of broke you in and raised your visibility?

CL:

Yeah, that was our first single out actually. That was our first thing as 2NE1. And it was really huge in Korea. And after that, everybody started making.. Every commercial had their own song.

Interviewer:

By the time you broke that song, you put some videos out. And it blew up to over a million views in a day.

CL:

Yes, I mean, we had a longer version of the commercial, and that was the video for that song. And.. yeah. I mean, we have to thank YouTube and the digital world, like you said. ‘Cause that broke all the walls for us to get here right now.

Interviewer:

And you continued to utilize it because your fans are situated all over the world. I first asked you if you would say that your biggest audience isn’t South Korean. You told me no. Maybe Japan. And now you’re coming into the United States. People connect with you how?

CL:

It’s our first global tour, you know. Now we’re starting to meet our fans. We wanna meet our fans from all around the world. So, you know, we started this tour. But before the tour, this year, they saw us through YouTube or our fan (web)site. You know, that’s the biggest thing right now.

Interviewer:

And were you given a platform to speak to your audience, and the people out there who have not heard your music, what is it, the message you wanna convey?

CL:

Oh, this is hard. Well. We’re ready. And.. I hope you’re ready.
