[Intro]
- I have such a great memory of US Open. One of those, probably the best memories is US Open playoff.
- One of the first things that I remember about women’s golf was Seri Park taking off her shoes.
- Everyone thinks she wore another socks under there, because her tan line was so obvious.
- My thought, that was amazing that she would go in barefeet into the water.
[Interview]
Interviewer:
After 18 years on the LPGA Tour, you’ve decided to make the 2016 season your last. Why did you decide to retire?
Park:
Actually I was decided a couple years ago. It just feels like the time for myself to move to another new level of myself, which is not just as a player. And I have a degree of success. Then I have everything that I want, what I want to be. And I’m trying to show all my love.
Interviewer:
Why did you make this decision now instead of at the end of the season?
Park:
Because I know this is my last season. It’s not goodbye goodbye, but they’re not gonna see me anymore playing. For sometimes, they’ll do, but not full-time as I used to. So that’s why I’m trying to say thank you to everybody.
Interviewer:
What are your plans for this final season?
Park:
I don’t know, because while I’m here, I talk about I’m retiring and planning for the year. It just feels really odd. But say, I’m just trying to play as much as I could as I used to as a player. I’m just trying to focus on it, and hopefully having fun at each tournament, trying to have another special memory myself.
Interviewer:
You won two majors in your rookie season in 1998 including the US Women’s Open. That really caught people’s attention, especially that shot that you hit out of the water, with no socks and shoes there on 18. What did that victory do for your confidence so early in your career?
Park:
It’s probably changing my whole golf career I guess. It’s maybe, the moment I don’t have.. I wasn’t sure. Maybe I won some tournaments too, but not as much as all those great memories about it, and built confidence about it.
I mean I always tell myself to be.. Um.. tell myself to be.. I have to get stronger, mentally stronger, physically stronger. I’m just always talking to myself, of myself, alone in the room, and hotel or house or even during the practice. Because I have to. I have to be really mentally strong enough to play with all those great top players in the world.
And that moment, that shot, I think that I make myself to be there, I can do all I want to do. So it’s why that.. from the water, the play off. That’s probably the biggest shot of my career. And probably the best shot of my career. It’s amazing that time I had, and of course. I was lucky person to have that moment in my career. As (you) know, Seri Park name, it’s basically that shot cost more than my name I guess.
Interviewer:
Now that shot became iconic, in your home country of South Korea, and they actually included it in a montage that they play on television every day with the national anthem. What did that feel like to become the face of Korean golf?
Park:
To tell the truth, back then, I never expected anything. I really don’t know. I don’t really understand anything, what’s going on around it, because it’s really such a busy, crazy year for me. Things happening around me, and playing with.. everybody giving tension on me, giving a lot of pressure on me, and giving a lot of pressure on me. But after a couple years later, I kind of feel like, understand a little bit more, and every week I go, people always being.. Even some people cry about it, crying, and they talk about (how) I made my (their) life change. I didn’t know I can make people happy when I play sports, though.
Interviewer:
What is it like to see players like Eunbi Park, following in your footsteps?
Park:
I’m very very proud of (it) and happy to see it. I open the door for them, because I’m here for my dream, but they’re here for their dream. In Korea, they’re called Seri kids, because all the players come to the US to play, and they play well. They follow all my steps which is.. that ‘cause.. because they’re watching golf on TV, studying on US open. That’s just amazing (to see it) happening.
So I was very proud of (it) and (had) pride for that, and hopefully keep continuing my next second life, I’m trying to help others, all those young future golfers, for women or men or boys. I’m trying to help them as much as I could, and.. try to give all my skills or (tips) to play well, and they can go out and pull work off.
