7. 고막남친 폴킴의 뉴질랜드 영어

폴킴씨는 고막남친, 음원강자로 정말 잘 알려져 있죠. 노래만 잘하시는 게 아니라 영어까지 잘 하시는데요! 학창시절 5년 간 뉴질랜드에 있었고, 대학은 일본에서 다녔다고 해요. 뉴질랜드에 오래 있었던 만큼, 발음도 영국식 억양에 더 가깝네요. 폴킴씨의 영어 인터뷰, 다같이 감상하러 가보실까요?

<Part 1>

 

Paul:

I was growing up just studying. I was actually studying accounting and marketing in university in Japan. And then, after I finished my army, I went back to school, and I was.. I don't know, I guess I was having a bit of hard time because all my friends were gone. My friends were gone. I was alone. And then I realized, you know.. Why can't I become a singer? I mean, I love singing. And if I have to choose something to do for the rest of my life, I would choose singing. And then, OK. Like that. I'll just go back to Korea and do what I can. So I was just, you know, just practicing. Uh.. learning. I don't know. Taking some lessons. But at the same time I have to do like, part time jobs.

 

 

*for the rest of one's life

남은 평생동안

'rest of ~' 라고 하면, '~의 나머지'를 의미합니다. 즉, '내 일생의 나머지 동안'은 [남은 평생동안]을 의미합니다.

 

예문)

I will love you for the rest of my life.

평생동안 너를 사랑할게.

 

I won't forgive him for the rest of my life.

나는 그를 평생 용서하지 않을 것이다.

**part-time job

시간제 근무, 아르바이트

'part time'은 '시간제'라는 뜻으로, 'part-time job'은 시간으로 근무하는 일, 즉 [시간제 근무, 아르바이트]를 의미합니다. 반대되는 말로는 full time job(정규직)이 있습니다.

 

예문)

Sarah is looking for a part-time job.

새라는 아르바이트를 구하고 있다.

 

I did a lot of part-time jobs when I was in college.

난 대학시절 아르바이트를 많이 했었다.

Paul:

Do you have a celebrity crush right now?

 

Paul:

Is there like a celebrity female that you like?

 

Paul:

I can't really say this though.

 

Interviewer:

Paul:

I'm a huge fan of, uh... Actually, like, a few days ago, I met Irene from Red Velvet.

 

Interviewer:

I saw you, I saw your SNS (social media).

 

Paul:

And people were so complaining about how my... 광대, my cheekbones were like so high and they’re smiling, I was trying to... really... I was trying to be... I don't know, like, this settled, calm person. I couldn't help myself. I couldn't help myself though.

좋아하는 사람, 짝사랑

'누군가에게 crush를 갖고 있다 (to have a crush on someone)' 라고 하면, 그 사람을 좋아하게 된 것을 의미합니다. 쌍방향의 관계가 아닌, 주로 짝사랑을 의미합니다.

 

예문)

A: I had a crush on you in high school.

나 사실 고등학교 때 너 좋아했었어.

B: I knew it, actually.

사실 알고 있었어.

 

Peter has a secret crush on his teacher.

피터는 그의 선생님을 몰래 짝사랑하고 있다.

 

A: Did you have any crush in high school?

너 고등학교 때 좋아하던 애 있었어?

B: I kind of liked Kevin.

나 케빈 좀 좋아했어.

Has there been any embarrassing moment that you'd love to forget? A few people have asked that. Maybe while performing?

 

Paul:

Embarrassing moment? Like recently?

 

Interviewer:

Or just any time on stage.

 

Paul:

I was actually a guest... I was guest at a 박정현 선배님, great, the legend, the legend, her personal concert. And I.. I totally forgot the second part of the chorus.

 

Interviewer:

As in the lyrics?

 

Paul:

The lyrics. The lyrics.

 

Interviewer:

Oh, that happens.

 

Paul:

I just stood there and looked at the crowd there. 'I'm sorry.'

 

Interviewer:

At 박정현’s concert?

 

Paul:

Very embarrassing. Not even my own concert.

 

Interviewer:

Wow, that's alright. That happens mate.

 

Paul:

I apologize. 

 

 

*That happens.

그런 일도 있다, 그런 때도 있다

'That happens, 그것은 일어난다.' 즉 [그런 일도 있다, 그럴 때도 있다] 정도로 해석하면 됩니다.

 

예문)

A: Oh my god, I forgot to bring my car key.

세상에, 자동차 열쇠 안 가져 왔네.

B: Well, that happens.

그럴 때도 있지.

 

A: I got a C on my exam...

시험에서 C 받았어...

B: Stop crying. That happens to me all the time.

그만 울어. 나한텐 항상 있는 일이야.

That happens, that happens. When were you in New Zealand then?

 

Paul:

So I left New Zealand in 2006, end of 2006. I'd been there for five years.

 

Interviewer:

Oh, you were there for five years? So during.. that's middle school or high school?

 

Paul:

High school. 

 

Interviewer:

High school, high school.

 

Paul:

The central park. The central city. The main part. I mean, after the earthquake, I heard everything's been destroyed. It's nothing more like.. what I remember. But I really miss Christchurch, though.

 

Interviewer:

Yeah, would you like to go back?

 

Paul:

Of course, anytime, anytime. Hopefully with my friends

 

Interviewer:

That'd be cool. That'd be cool.

Paul:

Hey, Lenny. This is Paul. I'm at my home. This is my home. Welcome, welcome. Sitting on the couch. Well, to be honest with you, to further taking (take) this film, I found a perfect spot. This is the best spot I found so far. Um, you know, taking a film at home could be very risky, without the lighting and makeup, you know. Well, this is the spot I've found. I had dinner about an hour ago. I'm still feeling really full. I don't know if I could sing. What was that?! Did you see that light? What was that? Anyway, now I'm feeling really scary (scared).

 

I promise that I'll stay humble. Even though my position right now is not so humble. Not so polite, but yeah. I'll stay humble, keep on singing, writing songs, and I'll practice a lot.. with my acting skills as well. Well, people say I'm a bad actor, but you never know. Maybe in few years, I could become like 김수현 and do, like, movies, or dramas like 공유. Have you seen (the) drama Goblin? Well, it's one of my favorite drama so far. I'm still crazy about it even after the last season. The last episode. Well, I just wanted to tell you I love Goblin. This is not promotion for Goblin, but still.. I love Goblin. 지금까지

'지금까지 쭉 이어져온 무언가를 말할 때', 혹은 무언가를 비교할 때 '지금까지의 것 중 가장 좋다'라는 의미를 강조하기 위해 사용되곤 합니다. '지금까지는 괜찮다'라는 의미로, 'So far, so good'이라는 표현이 있습니다.

 

예문)

A: How's the movie?

영화 재밌어?

B: So far, so good.

지금까지는 괜찮아.

 

A: Chris is so kind, isn't he?

크리스 너무 친절해, 그치?

B: He's the nicest person I've met so far.

지금까지 만나 본 사람 중 제일 착해.

**You never know.

앞날은 모른다.

'You never know, 넌 절대 어떻게 될지 모른다' 즉 앞날은 누구도 예측할 수 없고, 혹시 모르는 일이 생길 수도 있음을 뜻하는 말입니다.

 

예문)

A: She's never gonna be a singer.

쟨 절대 가수 못 해.

B: Don't say that. You never know.

그런 말 마. 혹시 모르지.

 

A: I'm pretty sure this is gonna be the worst movie in my entire life.

진짜 이 영화는 내 인생 최악의 영화야. 확신해.

B: You never know.

그거야 모를 일이지. (더 별로인 영화가 있을 수 있다)
